La Ligier JS17 del 1981 è stata una monoposto di Formula 1 di successo, segnando il ritorno ai motori Matra per la scuderia francese e portando il team a vincere due Gran Premi (Austria e Canada) con Jacques Laffite. Progettata da Gérard Ducarouge, la Ligier JS17 utilizzava il motore Matra MS81 aspirato, che ha sostituito il classico motore Ford Corworth DFV utilizzato fino all'anno precedente. Il maggiore consumo del motore Matra richiedeva un serbatoio più grande e lungo. Ducarouge introdusse le sospensioni idropneumatiche adattive per sfruttare al meglio l'effetto suolo, riuscendo a sfidare le più potenti vetture turbo dell'epoca. Il Gran Premio d'Austria 1981 è stata l'undicesima prova della stagione 1981 del Campionato mondiale di Formula 1. Si è corsa domenica 16 agosto 1981 sull'Österreichring. La gara è stata vinta dal francese Jacques Laffite su Ligier-Matra; per il vincitore si trattò del quinto successo nel mondiale.
The 1981 Ligier JS17 was a highly successful Formula 1 car, marking the return of Matra engines to the French team and securing two Grand Prix victories (Austria and Canada) with Jacques Laffite. Designed by Gérard Ducarouge, the JS17 was powered by the naturally aspirated Matra MS81 engine, which replaced the team’s long-standing Ford Cosworth DFV. The Matra engine’s higher fuel consumption required a larger, longer fuel tank. Ducarouge also introduced adaptive hydropneumatic suspension to fully exploit ground effect, allowing the car to compete with the era’s more powerful turbocharged rivals. The 1981 Austrian Grand Prix, held on Sunday, August 16 at the Österreichring, was the eleventh round of the 1981 Formula 1 World Championship.
